About

Mathematics has been an integral part of Indraprastha College for Women since 1933, reflecting the institution’s long-standing commitment to academic excellence and intellectual inquiry. The subject was initially introduced as a Discipline Course in the B.A. Program (then known as B.A. Pass). In its early years, the department was nurtured single-handedly by Mr. G. Goswami, who served as the sole faculty member from 1933 to 1948, laying a strong academic foundation for the generations that followed.

In 1948, late Dr. (Mrs.) Nirmala Prakash, joined the College as faculty member and worked very hard to start the Mathematics Course at Honours and Post Graduate level and Ultimately the Department expanded significantly in 1954 with the introduction of B.A. (Hons.) in Mathematics  marking a new phase of academic growth and specialization and in 1958  the college further strengthened its postgraduate offerings by introducing the M.A. in Mathematics, thereby creating a comprehensive academic pathway for students passionate about the discipline. Over the decades, the Department of Mathematics has evolved into a vibrant center of learning, known for its academic rigor, supportive mentorship, and dynamic engagement with contemporary developments in the field.

In an era defined by rapid technological advancement and a globally interconnected economy, the department academic strength lies in emphasizing on nurturing computational proficiency, critical and analytical thinking, and robust problem-solving abilities with our dedicated faculty members that are specialized in their respective fields including Fuzzy Mathematics, Topology, Partial Differential Equations, Mathematical Modeling, Algebra related areas, Chaos Theory etc. Students are encouraged to engage with real-world data, interpret numerical and graphical information critically, and formulate effective strategies for addressing complex challenges. This holistic training ensures that graduates are not only mathematically sound but also adaptable and future ready.

The Department is guided by dedicated, versatile and accomplished team of 12 faculty members that includes four Associate Professors Dr. Vagisha Sharma, Ms. Dolly Jain, Dr. Gunjan Khurana, Dr. Chander Shekhar and Eight Assistant Professors Ms. Monika Bansal, Dr. Vijay Kumar Tripathi, Dr. Pardeep Kumar, Dr. Sulekha Rani, Dr. Manju Sharma, Mr. Ashutosh Rajput, Ms. Ritika Gulati and Dr. Suman. Each faculty member brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, fostering a stimulating learning environment that encourages inquiry, collaboration, and innovation. Their diverse academic backgrounds ensure that students are exposed to multiple dimensions of mathematical thought ranging from pure mathematics to applied and computational domains.

A large number of alumnae of the Mathematics Department have achieved remarkable success in diverse professional areas ranging from academia, research field, corporate leadership in multinational companies, clearing prestigious competitive civil services examinations such as Ms. Vaishali Chopra (IAS officer), Ms. Jaya Sharma (IPS Officer), Shivika Rani (Software Engineer), Shivani Goel (Academic Associate) and many more.

The Department has consistently organized enriching academic and co-curricular initiatives to broaden students’ perspectives beyond the classroom. Regular lecture series featuring eminent academicians and industry experts provide insights into emerging areas of research and career opportunities. Workshops, Seminars, and interactive sessions further cultivate a culture of dialogue and intellectual curiosity.
