About Us

Indraprastha College for Women, the first women’s college of the University of Delhi, stands as a premier institution that seamlessly blends a proud historical legacy with a vibrant academic and dynamic cultural life. Established on 27 May 1924, the college has evolved into a distinguished centre of higher learning dedicated exclusively to women.

Spread across 21 acres, the campus is notable for its expansive green cover, with over sixty-five percent of the land designated as green area. This includes a rich variety of trees, plants, herbs, shrubs, and grasses, contributing to a serene and ecologically conscious environment.

The college is housed in the heritage building “Alipore House” on Sham Nath Marg, originally the residence of the British Civil Lines Commissioner. Constructed during the colonial period, the campus is surrounded by historically significant structures such as Metcalfe House, Old Secretariat, and Maidens Hotel, many of which continue to serve as important administrative centres of the Delhi government.

The architectural elegance of the campus reflects its rich past, while its carefully preserved structures provide students with an inspiring setting for academic pursuit. Beyond its architectural significance, the campus is renowned for its biodiversity. Its lush lawns, tree-lined avenues, and gardens support diverse flora and fauna, making it one of the most environmentally vibrant campuses in Delhi. This ecological richness nurtures sustainability awareness while fostering a calm and conducive learning atmosphere.

Academically, the college offers a wide spectrum of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, computational sciences, and business studies. In alignment with the National Education Policy 2020, students can pursue Honours, Research, and Programme courses in disciplines such as Political Science, Economics, Geography, History, Psychology, Sociology, Commerce, Computer Science, Philosophy, and various languages. The college also proudly celebrates the silver jubilee of its Department of Multi-Media and Mass Communication—one of the most distinctive programmes within the University of Delhi. The curriculum is designed to balance academic rigour with opportunities for research, creativity, and innovation.

Indraprastha College for Women is distinguished by its diverse student community, with learners drawn from across India and beyond. The college fosters a vibrant campus culture that encourages intellectual engagement alongside active participation in co-curricular activities. Numerous societies and forums provide platforms for debate, theatre, music, dance, fine arts, folk traditions, and community outreach—nurturing both creativity and critical thinking.

Holistic development is further strengthened through the college’s active NCC wing, NSS unit, and Physical Education Department. Students actively participate in initiatives such as anti-ragging campaigns, “Say No to Drugs,” Mission LiFE, corruption-free campus drives, and national development initiatives, reflecting a strong commitment to social responsibility, national priorities, and institutional values.

Through this integrated approach to education, the college ensures that its students graduate not only with academic excellence but also with leadership skills, social sensitivity, and cultural awareness.

Today, Indraprastha College for Women stands as a compelling blend of tradition and modernity—honouring its heritage while embracing contemporary aspirations. With its unique combination of historical architecture, ecological richness, academic excellence, and a dynamic student community, the college continues to empower women to become confident, socially conscious, and globally competent citizens.
