In an era, which is defined by climate change, rapid urbanisation and constantly evolving environmental landscapes, geography, emerges as one of the most relevant disciplines of our times. To study geography, is to understand how the earth evolves, how rivers carve valleys, or how cities expand and cultures grow. It unravels the spatial patterns of our Earth, revealing not only where things are, but why they exist as they do. Recognizing this significance, the Department of Geography, at Indraprastha College for Women, established during the academic session 2017–18 was founded with the vision of nurturing socially responsible and environmentally conscious individuals who would be well equipped to address the contemporary global challenges.
Since its inception, the department has grown into a dynamic, intellectually vibrant and research-driven academic space, where learning goes far beyond lectures and integrates immersive field work and research. The department is committed to building strong conceptual foundations while simultaneously equipping students with practical and technical expertise. Students are trained in cartographic techniques, advanced geospatial technologies, Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), statistical analysis, and digital mapping, becoming fully equipped with the analytical tools required in today’s data-driven world. The department’s well-equipped GIS Labs and dedicated Cartographic Labs further strengthen this objective by providing an environment where theoretical knowledge turns into practical know how and finds real-world applications, helping them build technical skills, think critically, and effectively address contemporary global challenges.
As a relatively young department, its alumni base is steadily growing, with graduates beginning to establish themselves in diverse fields such as higher education, research, geospatial industries, and public service. The department takes pride in its alumni who continue to contribute meaningfully to academia and professional domains, reflecting the strong academic foundation and training imparted during their course of study.
Moreover, the department’s academic framework is designed to provide a holistic and integrated understanding of both physical and human geography, enabling students to critically engage with the Earth as a dynamic and interconnected system. Core areas of study such as geomorphology, climatology, urban geography, environmental geography, and regional planning form the foundation of this learning, while equal emphasis is also placed on emerging and interdisciplinary domains such as climate change, disaster management, sustainability, and developmental studies. This approach encourages students to move beyond disciplinary boundaries and develop a nuanced perspective on contemporary global issues.
At the heart of the department’s vibrant academic culture, is it’s very own society, ‘KSHITIJ’. True to its name, which symbolizes the horizon of geographical wisdom, Kshitij plays a central role in fostering student participation and leadership. Through its initiatives, students actively engage in organizing academic and co-curricular activities. The department’s annual fest has successfully explored diverse and contemporary themes, including the Himalayan ecosystem, environmental management and Mission Life. Further, the launch of the department’s annual magazine, Geoquill, stands as a testament to student scholarship and innovation, providing a platform for original research and creative contributions.
The department’s academic engagements extend far beyond the campus boundaries to national and international platforms. Notable initiatives include the International Seminar on Envisaging Bharat as the Voice of the Global South: Revisiting COP28 in collaboration with ICSSR, participation in the 2nd International Conference on Green Hydrogen India (2024), and several workshops and panel discussions on disaster risk reduction, climate resilience, road safety and the role of women in shaping a transforming India. Such engagements position students at the forefront of contemporary global discourse.
Supported by a team of dedicated and experienced faculty members, including Prof. Poonam Kumria, Dr. Neetu Malik, Dr. Roshani Devi, Dr. Deshraj Meena, Dr. Vijay Pandey, Ms. Sneh Gangwar, Dr. Aakash Upadhyay, Dr. Rajan Maurya, Ms. Jyoti Verma, Ms. Shabnam Singh Rana, Dr. Gaurav, and Mr. Shubham Kumar Sanu, the department fosters a stimulating academic environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and active engagement. With expertise spanning diverse domains of physical and human geography, the faculty members play a vital role in guiding students through both theoretical and practical dimensions of the discipline.
Field visits remain the backbone of the discipline. Educational field visits to diverse regions such as Sikkim, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh have enriched the students’ knowledge and provided an on-ground exposure to real world complexities.
While academic excellence remains a defining strength of the department, however, equally commendable is the active participation and achievements of its students in co-curricular and extracurricular spheres, reflecting holistic development.
Thus, with its strong academic foundation and vibrant student culture, the department shapes not just geographers, but responsible and critical future policy makers.
