About

The Department of Economics at Indraprastha College for Women stands as one of the institution's oldest and most distinguished academic units. Founded with a vision to empower women through rigorous education, the department equips students with the theoretical foundations and analytical tools necessary to critically engage with economic phenomena at local, national, and global levels. Over the decades, it has evolved from a small unit teaching foundational theory into a vibrant, full-fledged undergraduate programme. Guided by a committed faculty, the department blends pedagogical innovation such as seminars, workshops, field trips, and interactive classrooms with contemporary real-world challenges, fostering a long-standing culture of intellectual inquiry and academic excellence.

This commitment to excellence is reflected in an illustrious lineage of alumni who have made pioneering contributions to academia, global public policy, and governance. In economic theory and research, the department is anchored by eminent scholars like Prof. Utsa Patnaik (Professor Emeritus, CESP, JNU) and Prof. Prachi Mishra (Ashoka University, formerly IMF and RBI). Its global policy footprint is exemplified by Sukriti Verma, a Senior UK Government Economist and former Indian Economic Service (IES) officer, while Dr. Reetika Garg shapes future minds as an Assistant Professor at the Delhi School of Economics. Furthermore, the legacy of public service is cemented by leaders like Kritika Sharma, Manisha Khuntia, Aishwarya Jain, and Surobhi Mukherjee, who serve the nation within the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the IES.

To sustain this calibre, the department offers a pedagogically rich curriculum that balances theoretical depth with applied competence across core thrust areas. These include Development Economics and Public Policy, which critically evaluates poverty, inequality, and welfare in the Indian context; and Quantitative Methods and Econometrics, equipping students with statistical tools for rigorous empirical research. The curriculum also spans International Economics and Trade, exploring globalization and foreign investment; Monetary Economics and Financial Markets, covering central banking and capital systems; and Environmental Economics, which aligns resource management with UN Sustainable Development Goals. This is complemented by a deep grounding in Indian Economic Policy and the History of Economic Thought.

The department’s evolutionary journey is marked by significant institutional milestones. Following its establishment as a founding unit of the college, the launch of the B.A. (Honours) Economics programme under the University of Delhi positioned it as a provider of one of the university's most sought-after social science degrees. Co-curricular engagement was institutionalised through the creation of 'Arthagya', the academic society that serves as the backbone of non-classroom intellectual life. Under its aegis, the department hosts 'Arthullas', a celebrated annual inter-college festival featuring guest lectures, debates, and policy simulations. Student scholarship is further nurtured through 'Prophets of Profit', the department’s academic journal that provides a platform for undergraduate research.

Embracing the future of higher education, the department has proactively integrated the transformative vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 through four foundational pillars. First, it drives curriculum revision and multidisciplinary learning, offering cross-disciplinary modules with disciplines like sociology, data science, and public policy to foster a holistic worldview. Second, it champions skill enhancement by offering value-added courses in data analysis using programming software like R, Stata, and Python alongside financial literacy. Third, the department embeds research integration early into the undergraduate path through mentored projects, final-year dissertations, and publication opportunities in Prophets of Profit. Finally, it strengthens industry-academia linkages by facilitating vital experiential learning internships with prominent think tanks, research bodies, corporate entities, and government institutions.

Driving this academic ecosystem is a highly accomplished faculty that actively contributes to frontier economic research and global scholarly discourse. The faculty members regularly participate and present papers at prestigious national and international conferences hosted by premier institutions, including the Delhi School of Economics (DSE), the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay). Dedicated to advancing knowledge, they consistently publish their research in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals indexed in Scopus and other global citation databases. Furthermore, the faculty dynamically engages in institutional research by undertaking both major and minor research projects, bringing contemporary empirical insights straight from their field investigations into the undergraduate classrooms
