Brief History of the Department

Established in 2017, the Department of Sociology at Indraprastha College for Women (IPCW), University of Delhi, was founded with the objective of fostering sociological inquiry, critical thinking, and research-oriented learning. Since its inception, the department has emerged as a vibrant academic space committed to excellence in teaching, research, and student development. Grounded in the sociological imagination, the department encourages students to understand the relationship between individual experiences and broader social structures, preparing them to engage critically with contemporary social issues and processes of change.

Notable Alumni

The department has maintained an excellent academic record with successive batches achieving 100 percent results. Its alumni have pursued postgraduate studies and advanced research programmes at prestigious universities and research institutions in India and abroad in Sociology as well as allied disciplines such as Psychology, Journalism, Public Health, Social Work, Management, Education, and Law. Graduates have established successful careers across academia, research, media, development organizations, public service, and the corporate sector, securing positions in organizations such as The Indian Express, Thomson Reuters, Gartner India, and McKinsey & Company.

Thrust Areas / Expertise / Research Areas

The Department of Sociology engages with a wide range of themes including social stratification, gender studies, development, identity and culture, media and society, migration, health, education, social change, and public policy. Faculty members and students actively explore contemporary issues through interdisciplinary perspectives, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and field-based inquiry. The department also promotes engagement with emerging areas such as digital society, sustainability, governance, and social justice.

Important Milestones

Since its establishment, the department has developed a strong academic and research culture marked by consistent student achievements, faculty publications in national and international refereed, Scopus-indexed, and peer-reviewed journals, and active participation in academic collaborations. A significant milestone was the department's involvement in organizing the 2nd International Conference on Emerging Multidisciplinary Studies and Social Sciences (ICEMSS-2025) held at IPCW in February 2025, which brought together scholars, researchers, industry experts, and students to deliberate on contemporary global challenges through interdisciplinary dialogue. The department has also actively participated in international academic initiatives, including collaborations associated with the ZEP Research Programme.

NEP 2020 Initiatives and Implementation

In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022, the department promotes multidisciplinary learning through Generic Elective (GE), Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC), Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC), and Value Addition Courses (VAC). Alongside classroom teaching, students are encouraged to participate in internships, fieldwork, research projects, seminars, workshops, and community engagement activities. These initiatives strengthen analytical, research, communication, and professional skills while fostering holistic development and experiential learning.

The Department of Sociology comprises a dedicated team of faculty members including Dr. Niharika Tripathi, Dr. Seema Tamta, Ms. Meeta Virmani, Dr. Pratichi Majumdar, Dr. J. P. Singh, Dr. Shivam Chaurasia, Ms. Deeksha Gangwar, and Ms. Priyanka Danu. The faculty members are actively engaged in teaching, research, curriculum development, mentoring, and academic outreach, contributing significantly to the department's growing academic profile.
