About

Brief History of the Department

The Department of Multi Media and Mass Communication at Indraprastha College for Women, University of Delhi, was established in 1999 with the launch of the Bachelor of Mass Media and Mass Communication (BMMMC) programme. Introduced at a time when media education was gaining increasing importance in India, the programme was envisioned to prepare students for the rapidly evolving world of media and communication. Combining academic rigor with practical training, it quickly attracted aspiring media professionals and emerged as one of the country's most sought-after undergraduate media programmes.

Over the past twenty-five years, the Department has grown into a vibrant centre for media and communication education. In keeping with developments in the media landscape and advancements in technology, the programme was later renamed B.A. (Hons.) Multi Media and Mass Communication (BMMMC). Today, it holds the distinction of being the only undergraduate programme of its kind offered by the University of Delhi. Rooted in the social sciences and humanities, the programme provides students with a strong interdisciplinary foundation while equipping them with professional skills in media production and communication.

The Department has always placed a strong emphasis on experiential and industry-oriented learning. Students engage with a diverse range of subjects including journalism, radio, television, photography, graphic design, documentary production, new media, development communication, disaster communication, fashion communication, and communication for special needs. The curriculum is complemented by an internship component after Semester IV, enabling students to gain valuable professional exposure and firsthand industry experience.

To support this learning environment, the Department has developed state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a professional Audio-Visual Production Centre with television and radio studios, production control rooms, editing suites, and contemporary media production technologies. It has continuously upgraded its facilities to meet the changing demands of media education, including the establishment of a dedicated Media Lab and multimedia-enabled classrooms that enhance teaching, learning, and content creation.

A major milestone in the Department's journey was the launch of IP Gyaan Tarang in 2023. Available as a web radio platform and mobile application on both iOS and Android, it provides students with a dynamic space for audio production, digital content creation, and community engagement through innovative broadcasting practices.

With the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the curriculum underwent significant revision in 2022 to align with emerging academic and industry needs. The revised programme places greater emphasis on media and communication research, introducing courses such as Research Methodology and Communication Research. These additions strengthen students' analytical abilities, research skills, and scholarly engagement while complementing their professional media training.

The year 2026 marks another important chapter in the Department's history, as it celebrates the graduation of the first cohort of students completing the four-year undergraduate programme under the NEP 2020 framework. This milestone reflects the Department's commitment to academic innovation and its readiness to adapt to changing educational paradigms.

Guided by a dedicated team of faculty members and enriched by the contributions of visiting scholars, media practitioners, and industry experts, the Department continues to nurture critical thinking, creativity, research aptitude, technical competence, and social responsibility among its students.

Over the years, the Department has produced generations of journalists, filmmakers, communication professionals, researchers, academicians, and media practitioners who have made meaningful contributions to the media and communication landscape in India and beyond. As it moves forward, the Department remains committed to fostering excellence in media education while preparing students to engage thoughtfully and creatively with an ever-changing communication environment.

NEP 2020 Initiatives and Implementation

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 seeks to enhance educational flexibility, promote skill-based learning, and ensure industry relevance. In the context of Multimedia and Mass Communication (MMC) courses, NEP 2020 introduces significant reforms aligned with the dynamic nature of the media industry.

NEP 2020 encourages the removal of barriers between academic disciplines. Students enrolled in MMMC programs may select courses from fields such as design, computer science, psychology, and literature. For instance, journalism students may pursue a minor in UI/UX design or data analytics. This multidisciplinary approach cultivates professionals with deep expertise in media and a broad set of complementary skills.

The policy provides enhanced flexibility, allowing students to exit after one year with a Certificate, two years with a Diploma, three years with a Degree, or four years with a Degree and Research. Academic credits are maintained in the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) and remain valid for future use. This system enables MMMC students to pursue employment or internships with media organizations, digital platforms, or advertising agencies without discontinuing their academic progress.

NEP requires the integration of vocational education into higher education. For MMMC, this means more hands-on labs, internships, and industry projects, rather than focusing solely on theory. Courses now prioritise practical skills like video editing, podcasting, digital marketing, AR/VR storytelling, and fact-checking.

Impact on Students & Industry

  1. Industry-ready graduates-: Increased practical experience helps students quickly integrate into newsrooms, studios, and digital media companies.
  1. Entrepreneurship-: NEP’s emphasis on startups and innovation supports MMC students in launching their own YouTube channels, production companies, or content agencies.
  1. Ethics and Critical Thinking-: NEP highlights Indian knowledge systems and media ethics, prompting courses to include modules on media law, fake news detection, and responsible journalism.

The bottom line is that NEP 2020 is transforming MMMC from a program focused on theory and basic practical skills into a flexible, skill-first approach. The goal is to prepare media professionals who can navigate trends in AI, OTT, and short-form content.
