In 1999 Indraprastha College for Women, with its finger on the pulse of the times, had introduced the Bachelor of Mass Media and Mass Communication (BMMMC). The course met with stupendous response and attracted aspirants who went on to become media professionals, thinkers and practitioners in their chosen field. The College today ranks among the top media schools in the country. Twenty years into its existence now, the changed nomenclature of the Course is B.A. (Hons) Multi-Media and Mass Communication (BMMMC). Indraprastha College for Women is the only College of the University of Delhi to offer B.A. (Hons.) Multi Media and Mass Communication. The Course is self-financed and approved by the University of Delhi. The Course is located within the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences and the Humanities (FAASH) and is based on the basic principles of Social Sciences and Humanities and their interdisciplinary nature. It is also an application course that imparts technical knowledge, skills and hands-on training in the use of the latest technology.The objective of the Course is to create a practitioner with updated knowledge, critical thinking, and skills to handle media technology and a clear understanding of media practices. The Course emphasizes not merely on producing skilled workers for the media industry but also on developing a core competence and comprehension of communication across Mass-Media, in their complexity, political dynamics, technological advances and transformations.The Course seeks to extend employability of students beyond the spectrum of the media industry, to public policy, production and higher and specialized education. Some of the thrust areas of the Course are also those fore-grounded on the national agenda, and the College is keen to avail the outreach policies and programs of the Government of India in the areas of knowledge application and skill development.A non-credit and compulsory internship component is factored in at the end of Semester IV, to promote the interface with industry and diversification into media and communication related areas.
The BMMMC Course in the first year introduces the student to the Fundamentals of Communication Theory and Models, 'Introduction to Journalism' and 'Print Media Production' which is a hands-on application unit. 'Communication Research' enables the student with the basics of data collection, and organizing and interpreting information.
The second year is envisaged at an incremental difficulty level. It introduces areas like 'Hindi Cinema', 'Graphic Design', 'Television Journalism', and moves on to specialized fields which require application and practical training like 'Development Communication', 'Camera and Editing for Photography & Video and Reporting' and 'Anchoring for Radio and TV' and 'Communication for Disaster Management'.
The third year includes four specialized communicative modes introduced for the first time, with the papers: 'Fashion Communication', 'Communication for Special Needs' with the focus on disability, 'Writing for Media' and 'New Media'. The papers on 'Communication and the Plastic Arts' explores public art in public spaces, 'Global Politics and Media' and 'Integrated Market Communication' cohere logically to provide the student with a macro-perspective on the practices and culture of the domain and the hands-on 'The Documentary' provide further understanding and training in the media concerned.
IP College has the infrastructural wherewithal to make the required facilities available to run the Course. The Department has a State-of-the-Art Audio- Visual Production Centre. There is a fully equipped studio, a radio production centre, editing bays with all the necessary equipment for in-house training and production related to the Course.
The Course is taught by faculty drawn from related departments of the College, other institutions and experts and practitioners from the media industry.
Admission to the course is through an All India Entrance Test, designed by the Department and conducted by the University of Delhi.
The existing and ready infrastructure of Indraprastha College for Women has positioned it uniquely to offer every facility required for students to pursue the course in the College. The huge infrastructure built over 20 years of IP College for the course includes a fully air-conditioned Audio Visual Production Centre, which houses a studio and PCR for video production, a studio and PCR for audio production, editing bays with latest hardware and software. In 2019 it also added a new Media Lab and classrooms equipped with multimedia production facilities.
The Department procured the latest DSLR cameras, camcorders, video cameras, audio-mixers, broadcast-grade monitors, video switchers and other production equipment. A teleprompter was also setup. The equipment is made available on an individual basis to each student for hands-on experience of the Course, and to enable them to fulfil the requirements of the curriculum. The upgraded software provided by the Department include Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Adobe Creative Suite and Corel Draw.
The College already has the web link of the Delhi University Community Radio (DUCR), called IP College DU World Link Community Radio, which has conducted regular transmission of Radio Programmes, designed by the college students and teachers.
